Two rare 720hp Mercedes CLK GTR supercars are up for auction next month in London. Just 26 examples of the GT1 racecar-derived machine were made for the road in the late 1990s – 20 coupes and six roadsters.
A coupe and roadster are on offer in the auction, both described as new, unregistered and with delivery miles only. Although it has not been confirmed, they are believed to have been owned by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. They are both right-hand drive versions of the car (the only ones built, in fact) and were custom built. The estimated price for the coupe is $603,000 to $635,000 and $700,000 to $814,000 for the roadster – around a third of what they cost new.
Modified only slightly from the racecar, the CLK GTR is powered by an Ilmor-modified 720hp 6.9-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine with dual overhead camshafts. It had 572lb ft of torque and a claimed 0-62mph time of 3.4sec.
Showing its race pedigree, it also has a six-speed sequential manual gearbox with paddle-shift operation, independent front and rear suspension with double wishbones, pushrod-actuated coil springs and shock absorbers, and four-wheel ventilated, anti-lock carbon-fibre disc brakes.
Both cars will be sold by RM Auction's Automobiles of London on October 28.
