The inaugural BFGoodrich SCCA Super Tour crowned 28 winners on Sunday at Texas World Speedway under sunny skies as part of the second race of the Texas Two Step Double National hosted by the Lone Star Region. 157 cars took the green flag during six group races in the first of six Super Tour races this season.
David Burkett, of Corpus Christi, Texas, became the first overall winner of a BFGoodrich SCCA Super Tour race on Sunday, winning the Group 1 race in his RFR 09 Formula 1000 machine.
Burkett passed overall polesitter Jacek Mucha, of Laval, Quebec, on lap six of the 16 lap race at the 2.9-mile Texas World Speedway. After slipping past Mucha's Swift from the C Sports Racing class, Burkett's race encountered some potential problems when his rear wing collapsed on lap 12. It didn't affect the outcome, however, as Burkett was able to come home with the overall win by 10.723 seconds.
Five different class winners comprised the top five overall in the group one race, with Formula Enterprises winner Scott McQueen third, followed by Formula Continental winner Dwight Rider and Formula Mazda winner Mike Anderson.
Further down the overall standings, Jim Rawson took the checkered flag in the DSR class, Gregory Byrne won in Formula Atlantic and Jack Donnellan topped the Sports 2000 class.
Mucha turned the fastest lap of the race, posting a best time of 1:38.574 (105.910 mph).
Formula Mazda polesitter and defending National Champion Darryl Wills had his car on the grid, but was left there with mechanical difficulties and didn't make the start.
An always hotly-contested Spec Racer Ford class didn't disappoint at Texas World Speedway, as a 23-car class took the green.
Denny Stripling and Chris Funk battled until the final lap, when a spinning lapped car broke up the duo from running nose-to-tail and allowed Stripling to win in the inaugural BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour weekend.
Stripling, from McKinney, Texas, led Carl Harris and Funk in a three-car breakaway early. Funk moved into the runner-up position with a move to the outside of Harris in turn one of lap six, then closed quickly on Stripling. By lap 10, the two were being chased by 16th-starting John Stricker, now running in third.
Just as quickly as Stricker joined the battle, a mechanical issue knocked him out of the lead pack and left it a two-man race for the remaining six laps. Funk pulled alongside Stripling on each of the last two laps on the banking and into turn one, but never was able to move in front of the eventual winner.
Kevin Bosien, Harris, and Doug Azzarito completed the top-five in Spec Racer Ford. Polesitter Rick Bellew turned the fastest lap of the race with a best time of 1:56.593 (89.002 mph).
Austin Snader, of Brookshire, Texas, drove his E Production Mazda RX-8 to an overall win in Group 3 on Sunday, racing out to a big lead on the field twice thanks to a mid-race full course caution that erased his initial deficit. Snader ended the day with a 19.353-second margin of victory in the time-shortened 13-lap race at Texas World Speedway.
The caution flew on lap four when the BMW 330 of Toby Grahovec lost a rear wheel in Turn Seven and left him stranded just off the course, re-forming the field behind Snader. He pulled away on the lap 10 restart, leaving second-running Bob Bramlage, in an F Production Mazda Miata, to battle with the GT-Lite Mazda Miata of Luis Rivera, the F Production Mazda Miata of Stuart Robinson and the Lotus Super Seven of James Smith.
Robinson got a great jump on the restart, but ran off track in Turn 2 and fell behind Rivera and Bramlage. Working back through the field, Bramlage and Robinson made side-by-side contact on lap 12, ending Bramlage fight for the lead.
At the checkered flag, Snader led Rivera, Robinson, Smith and Bill Allman in an E Production Mazda RX-7.
In addition to Snader, Rivera and Robinson's class wins, Don Istook recovered from a first lap spin in the STU class to work back through the field for a win. Istook's Volkswagen GTI was battling in the opening lap with Grahovec when Istook spun and recovered, but not before he dropped to the rear of the field. James Rogerson took a class win in an H Production Honda Civic, while James Place earned the Showroom Stock C win in an Acura Integra GSR.
Snader turned the overall fastest lap of the race with a time of 1:53.030 (92.356 mph).Grahovec set a new STU class track record during the race with a best time of 1:57.385 before the mechanical issue ended his day, while Rivera did the same for the GT-Lite class with a best time of 1:57.396.
Randy Acock, of Robstown, Texas, took the overall Group 4 win and the Formula F win by 1.526-seconds, battling both his Formula F counterparts and the race leader in Formula 500 before piloting his Van Dieman Rf-98 to a 1.526-second victory at Texas World Speedway.
Acock, Zak Kanter and Wesley Cunningham got the jump on the field at the start of the race, with Cunningham starting second and moving to the outside of polesitter Acock. Cunningham led the field through the first part of the opening lap, but spun in Turn 9 and was left behind. Acock, Kanter, and the Formula 500 KBS Cyclone of CJ McAbee then pulled away from the rest of the field, with McAbee claiming the overall lead on lap three.
Kanter and Acock slipped past McAbee on lap 8, with Kanter holding the lead until spinning on lap 10. Kanter rejoined, still in third place, but 7.649 seconds behind Acock in the lead. Despite a charge from Kanter, Acock had a comfortable lead entering the final laps of the 16-lap race and cruised to victory, including the race's fastest lap with a time of 1:47.356 (97.247 mph).
Harvey Kanter finished third in the Formula F class. Jack Walbran and Carl Maier joined McAbee on the Formula 500 podium.
Charles Hearn piloted his Formula Vee Vortech to his class win, beating R. David Jones and Stephen Rainey to the finish line.
Group 5 housed the largest class of the weekend, with Aaron McSpadden, of Round Rock, Texas, topping a 40-car Spec Miata field at Texas World Speedway after a thrilling battle with Blake Clements.
With Matt Reynolds, McSpadden and Clements broke away from the rest of the field during the race's opening laps. Clements and McSpadden eventually left Reynolds behind as well, battling between each other for the win. Clements tried for three laps to get past McSpadden going into Turn 1 before making a pass with a surprise move in Turn 10 on lap eight.
On lap 13, McSpadden moved to the outside in turn one, with Clements moved to the outside to defend the move. That defensive maneuver left the door open to the inside in turn three, however, which McSpadden took advantage of before racing to a 0.334-second final victory.
McSpadden turned the fastest lap of the race in a time of 1:59.535 (87.338 mph).
Reynolds finished third, followed by Gale Corley and John Phillips.
David Fershtand, of Ft. Worth, Texas, turned a fast lap of 1:43.820 (100.559 mph) on his way to a GT-1 class and overall win in Group 6.
Fershtand's Oldsmobile Cutlass beat Carl Janin to the checkered flag in the 16-lap race by 1.787-seconds after a late charge by Janin's Chevrolet Camaro closed the gap. Don Noe, in a Ford Mustang, finished third in the GT-1 class and overall.
The Group 6 race featured eight classes. Eric Galerne finished first in STO and fourth overall in a Dodge Viper ACR-X. Kerry Bonner completed the overall top five with a GT-3 in a Ford Probe.
David Koller (Touring 1 Chevrolet Corvette), Richard Kulach (Touring 2 BMW M3) and JF McClughan (Touring 3 Mazdaspeed3) each took wins in the Touring category.
Eric Ritchie won in American Sedan in a Pontiac Firebird, while Toby Grahovec redeemed himself from his earlier mechanical difficulties with a win in his Showroom Stock B BMW Z4.
