M-Sport Stobart Ford driver Matthew Wilson says visiting the scene of his massive 2005 Rally of Wales crash has helped him make sense of the shunt which put him out of action for months.
Wilson and co-driver Scott Martin went back to the Gartheiniog stage on the recce for this week's Rally GB and drove past the corner where they went off the road six years ago. While the official route took them away from the corner, the pair stopped and walked to the location of the crash.
"It was really strange being back there," said Wilson. "I think it's helped me a little bit going back there. I didn't remember anything from the main part of the stage, but as soon as we turned through the hairpin right and headed down the hill, I knew that was the place.
"It's so, so fast going down there. I remember Mark [Higgins] had stopped at the side of the road and I remember thinking as we went past: 'Wow, we're in the lead of the rally.' Then there was a bump which threw the back of the car into the air and we were off into the trees."
Wilson's Focus RS WRC went from 105mph to zero in 1.2sec. He shattered his left knee into 13 pieces, broke his left forearm and dislocated his right wrist, while Martin suffered a broken femur.
The 24-year-old added: "We're not using that stretch of the stage [known as the ski slope] competitively this year, but if we were I think there would be a couple of cautions in there!"
