Williams' technical director Sam Michael is convinced Nico Hulkenberg will deliver despite a difficult start to Formula 1 racing in the first two events of the season.
The German rookie, the current GP2 champion, finished in 14th position in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix after spinning on the opening lap. In Australia, he was taken out of the race after Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi crashed into him also on the first lap. Despite the two disappointing races, Michael reckons Hulkenberg will perform strongly soon.
"Nico is a fast driver," said Michael. "He's still finding his feet as this is only his first season in Formula 1. He's smart, and he knows what he has to do. I have 100 percent confidence in him delivering for the team."
Michael admitted the team had a lot of work to do yet, despite Rubens Barrichello finishing in the points in Melbourne.
"It was good to get some more points on the board, but we still have a lot of work to do to improve in all areas," he said.
The Williams team's technical head also conceded his outfit made a mistake during the Australian race, where Barrichello put on the harder tires after his pit stop.
"We discussed it as a team and took the decision together. In hindsight, however, it probably wasn't the correct choice and we should have run the option tire."
