Guy Wilks has been given the all-clear to return to the UK to continue his recovery after fracturing his first and second lumbar vertebrae in an accident during last weekend's Rally Italia-Sardegna.
The Skoda driver was expected to fly home today on a direct charter flight from Olbia to Luton, whereupon he will then see a back specialist before determining when to return to competition in the IRC. The 29-year-old, who is third in the Intercontinental Rally Championship, crashed on the opening stage of the event and was airlifted to the San Martino Hospital in Oristano after reporting back pain.
X-Rays of Wilks' injury did not indicate compression or complications to the fractures..
"I'd like to thank the doctors and nurses at San Martino Hospital for taking such good care of me, and for all the good will messages I've received," said Wilks. "I'm in good spirits, and looking forward to getting home, seeing a specialist and planning our next rally."
