Jamie Whincup beat race one winner Mark Winterbottom to pole position for race two of V8 Supercars' Barbagallo triple-header on Sunday morning.

Ford Performance Racing team-mates Winterbottom and Will Davison held the provisional front row slots approaching the end of the 15-minute session, for which hard tires were mandatory. But a 56.3260-second lap from Triple Eight Holden driver Whincup with two minutes to go thrust the reigning champion to the top by 0.0029s over Winterbottom, the man who beat him to victory on Saturday.

Davison will start third as he bids to reclaim the points lead he lost to Whincup on Saturday thanks to his first-lap incident.

Lee Holdsworth was fourth quickest for Stone Brothers, followed by Brad Jones Racing's Jason Bright, the early race leader on Saturday.

Whincup's team-mate Craig Lowndes was back in 14th, albeit only half a second off the pace, while Saturday polesitter Garth Tander languished in 20th, three places behind his Holden Racing Team team-mate James Courtney.

Qualifying for race three follows after a short break. Drivers must use soft tires as the grid is set for the third of the weekend's races.
