Tristan Vautier held off Sam Schmidt Motorsports team-mate Esteban Guerrieri to secure pole for Saturday's Indy Lights race at Iowa Speedway.
Vautier, who currently leads Guerrieri in the points standings, took the top spot with a two-lap average of 159.973mph. In lap time, the gap between him and Guerrieri was just 0.09sec.
"I tried to be very precise with my feedback to the engineers to lead the car in the right way, and everyone did a great job," said the Frenchman. "Tomorrow is a long race and it's going to take a lot to win this one, but we are in a good position and hopefully we'll make the most of it."
Victor Carbone secured a Schmidt 1-2-3 on the grid by going third fastest ahead of Andretti Autosport's Sebastian Saavedra, with David Ostella (Team Moore Racing) and Oli Webb (Schmidt) filling the third row.
The session passed without incident save for Belardi's Mike Larrison spinning and brushing the wall on his out-lap. The rookie ended the session without setting a time.
