Renger van der Zande Persson Mercedes DTM 2011

Renger van der Zande is set to make his prototype sports car racing debut this year with the Lotus LMP2 squad in the World Endurance Championship.

The Dutchman, who raced for Mercedes in the DTM last year, expects to compete in six WEC events with the team, alongside a campaign in the Formula 1-supporting Porsche Supercup which kicks off in Bahrain this weekend.

"I'm actually quite proud that two months after my sudden departure from the DTM, I already have an interesting year lined up," said van der Zande, who only found out in February that he was not being retained by Mercedes.

"International motorsport is currently facing seriously reduced budgets, so landing a seat in a professional class is far from easy. I'm sincerely grateful to Colin Kolles and the Lotus team for giving me this opportunity. I need to get into my 'endurance mode,' and I'm looking forward to it."

The team announced last week that it was expanding to a second WEC Lotus-powered Lola for the upcoming Spa Six hours, with James Rossiter and Kevin Weeda confirmed as drivers.
