Chris van der Drift has undergone his first surgery following his horrifying crash in the Superleague Formula race at Brands Hatch on Sunday.
The 24-year-old launched off the back of Julien Jousse's car at Pilgrim's Drop, hit the bridge parapet, briefly caught fire and came to rest in the dip before Hawthorn. He sustained a broken ankle, two broken ribs, a cracked shoulder blade, a dislocated shoulder and two broken fingers.
Van der Drift underwent surgery on his ankle on Monday afternoon at a hospital in Dartford, England and is due to have further surgery on one of his broken fingers. He is expected to be transferred to a hospital near his home in Milton Keynes in a few days.
