Davide Valsecchi AirAsia 2011 GP2 Asia Imola

Davide Valsecchi has been handed a 10-place grid penalty for the GP2 season opener in at Istanbul Park.

The Italian qualified eighth fastest on Friday, but he was responsible for one of the three red flags during the session when his car stopped on the back straight.

Valsecchi then slowly rolled his AirAsia car backwards down the track toward the Turn 9/10 chicane, before eventually getting the car refired. However, that move was deemed dangerous by the stewards, and he will now start 18th as a result of the penalty, which was imposed for driving in the opposite direction to the traffic and failing to leave the track at the earliest and safest opportunity once he'd encountered the problem.

"Unfortunately during the session we had a problem with the engine switching off which resulted in me making what has been deemed a dangerous manoeuvre and being dealt a penalty," said Valsecchi. "I am really disappointed, because after a strong start we have been really unlucky. It will be difficult to start from 18th place on the grid, but hopefully I can get a good start and collect some points at the end of the race."
