As at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, RACER guest contributor Melissa Eickhoff, self-described “Motorsports misfit and editor-at-play” will be providing photos throughout the weekend from this weekend's X Games in Los Angeles that will appear on the RACER Facebook page.
Marcus Gronholm's Global Rallycross Championship Ford Fiesta was in Rick Graves' studio for an “In Focus” shoot on June 22 to appear in a future edition of RACER. A few teaser shots are also on our Facebook page.
Friday's action at the X Games featured jump practice, but there was one bad accident with rally driver Toomas Heikkinen, who launched but did not complete the jump – instead nosing into the ramp. The Finn broke his left ankle and suffered abdominal injuries from the accident.
More of the Rallycross action will occur throughout the weekend. Competitors in the field include former WRC sparring partners Gronholm and Sebastien Loeb, along with Ken Block, Tanner Foust and Travis Pastrana expected to compete. Friday night at the X Games featured Moto X Step Up and Best Trick competition, won by Ronnie Renner (47 feet for Step Up) and Jackson Strong (Best Trick), respectively.
UPDATED: Marcus Gronholm had an accident during Rallycross practice on Saturday. Gronholm's car cleared a jump but hit a barrier with the left front part of the car for contact. Past 10:00 p.m. ET, ESPN's TV coverage reported Gronholm was knocked unconscious, but was still breathing and transported to a local hospital.
Shortly thereafter, Global Rally Cross wrote this on its Twitter feed:
"After a rough crash we can confirm that @gronholmm was knocked unconscious but is now awake and en route to the hospital. Thoughts & prayers"
