TOPEKA, Kan. (May 10, 2007) – For SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge competitors, a new prize, the Toyo Cup, has been introduced to recognize those drivers who make tremendous contributions to the series while sharing their time with another profession.-30-
The Toyo Cup awards a $250 Toyo Tires credit at each race to the highest finishing driver enrolled in the program, who will also be acknowledged in the winner’s circle ceremonies and in the post-race media coverage. In addition, the Toyo Cup drivers in SCCA SPEED GT and SPEED Touring Car who accumulate the most points over the course of the season will be recognized with an award at the SCCA SPEED World Challenge year-end award ceremony.
The Toyo Cup program is designed for those drivers who do not rely on racing as a sole occupation. To enroll in the Toyo Cup program, drivers must submit an application to SCCA Pro Racing for approval by series officials.
“As a long-time partner of SCCA SPEED World Challenge, Toyo Tires understands the sacrifices many racers make just to get to the track,” Toyo Tires Senior Director of Marketing Steve Hutchinson said. “With the Toyo Cup, we show our appreciation for those drivers who may not make the headlines, but are crucial to a successful race weekend with their heartfelt performance on the track.”
“The Toyo Cup is in place to recognize a group of drivers dedicated to the enrichment of our series,” SCCA Pro Racing President Bob Wildberger said. “We’ve created a competition inside a competition for those drivers who remain dedicated to SCCA Pro Racing, while also pursuing other occupations, and who unselfishly contribute their time and resources every weekend, in the name of racing. These are the unsung heroes of our series.”
Toyo Tires has been the official tire of SCCA SPEED World Challenge since 2001. This season, the SPEED GT and SPEED Touring Cars will attack each track on Toyo Proxes RA1™ tires.
The first Toyo Cup awards will be handed out next weekend, May 17-19, at Miller Motorsports Park for the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix Presented by The Grand and Little America Hotels. The SCCA SPEED Touring Car race will be broadcast Saturday, May 26 at 1:00 p.m. (EDT) on SPEED. The SCCA SPEED GT race is scheduled to air Sunday, May 27 at 5:00 p.m. (EDT), also on SPEED.
