Scuderia Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost has praised the efforts of chief designer Ben Butler on the back of an encouraging start to the season for the Faenza-based team.
Butler moved from Red Bull Racing to Toro Rosso when the Italian team began building its own car from the end of 2009, and it appears to have made major progress this year with the aggressive twin-floored STR6.
"We have a young designer, Ben Butler, who was 'our man' at Red Bull Technologies and who moved to Faenza since we started to design our car ourselves," said Tost. "I think he did an extremely good job."
Tost reckons that the team had gone into the year unsure if the gamble on its radical design would pay off, but was delighted that it had.
"We could not be certain because we went into new directions with the design of our new STR6," he explained. "It was risky for sure – in terms of current position and of the possibilities for further developments. We tried to gain more room for changes. We modified the airflow onto the car. It looks as though this has paid off."
