It was confirmed today that Tomas Scheckter will return to action for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing at Toronto.
The South African who competed for the team at Indianapolis and Texas Motor Speedway this year has only been confirmed for this one race, while regular driver of car No. 24, Mike Conway, is recuperating. In his accident on the penultimate lap of the Indy 500, Conway has a compression fracture of one of his thoracic vertebrae and was fitted for a back brace, which he will wear for three months and will prevent him from racing.
"We are happy to have Tomas and MonaVie back with us for the Honda Indy Toronto,” said D&R's co-owner, Dennis Reinbold. “We have developed a good relationship with him, and, for us, Tomas made the most sense because we had a great run with him there last year. He did extremely well and unfortunately was taken out of the race when he was running up high. We hope to finish what we started."
Scheckter raced with D&R last year competing at 10 races for the team. He earned three top-10 finishes. He reunited with D&R this season for the 94th running of the Indianapolis 500, where he led for five laps and finished 15th overall. Scheckter also filled in for Conway at Texas Motor Speedway where he finished in 13th position.
Said Scheckter: "I am really happy to be in a D&R car again. I know the task ahead at Toronto will be challenging and, for the most part, it will be good to learn from Justin and his experience on street courses. I look forward to the challenge and feel at home at DRR for this event given our good race pace last year. I have to thank not only Dennis, Robbie and Larry Curry, but also MonaVie and their support for allowing me to be back in the racecar where I feel most at home."
According to the press release, decisions have not yet been made on a driver for the remainder of the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Season. Since Conway's accident, Graham Rahal raced the No. 24 at Iowa and Paul Tracy at Watkins Glen. However, Tracy is not available for either of the two Canadian races as he already has a deal to drive a fourth car for KV Racing.
