Rangers win Donington's Superleague "dash for cash"

John Martin and Rangers bagged the 100,000 Euro "dash for cash" to bring the curtain down on round three of Superleague Formula at Donington Park, the Aussie heading a 1-2 for British clubs as he was chased home by Tottenham Hotspurs' Craig Dolby.
 

Gommendy scores Porto's first Superleague win

Tristan Gommendy netted Porto's first Superleague Formula victory of 2009 at Donington Park on Sunday afternoon, the Frenchman using an early pit strategy to gain himself clear air to jump ahead of those who pitted later. Enrique Bernoldi (Flamengo) led from pole position as fellow front-row starter Davide Rigon (Olympiakos) started from the pitlane due to an engine change after race one.

German youngster Max Wissel recorded the first Superleague Formula victory for FC Basel at Donington Park on Sunday morning, jumping ahead of early leader Antonio Pizzonia of Corinthians in the pitstops and pulling off a crucial pass on Rangers' John Martin at Schwantz Curve soon after. Pizzonia led from the off, but the rolling start was a messy affair, and allowed Wissel to get past the other front row man Davide Rigon (Olympiakos)

Corinthians leads way in Superleague practice

Ex-Formula 1 racer Antonio Pizzonia set the fastest time in free practice for round three of Superleague Formula at Donington Park, but series returnee squad Sevilla rivalled him as being the most consistent across the three sessions. All running so far has been rain-affected, with the opening 30-minute session offering the driest weather conditions. That was led by Corinthians' driver Pizzonia, who was almost half a second clear of Lyon's Nelson Panciatici

Scuderia Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost has hit back at critics who say Jaime Alguersuari is too young to be in Formula 1. Alguersuari is set to become the youngest driver to start an F1 race this weekend, but his promotion into Toro Rosso has caused controversy, with Mark Webber and Felipe Massa saying he should not have been given the chance yet. However, Tost has jumped to Alguersuari's defence - and said he thinks the youngster will have a bright future in F1 as he is groomed for eventual promotion to Red Bull Racing.

Alain Menu took a World Touring Car victory at Brands Hatch for the fourth consecutive year in today's first race. The Swiss driver, who is an expert around the British track after winning two BTCC titles during a decade in the series, converted his pole position into his 11th career WTCC victory. Menu's RML Chevrolet team-mate Rob Huff took the lead around the outside of Paddock Hill Bend as the pair worked to keep Andy Priaulx's BMW at bay.
 

Simoncelli wins 250cc at the Sachsenring

Marco Simoncelli has won the shortened and delayed 250cc German Grand Prix, after rain interrupted the first start. But it was a short drizzle that left the track dry by the time the 19-lap race was re-started half an hour later, with all riders starting on slick tyres except for Karel Abraham, whose gamble on wets didn't pay off. Gilera's Simoncelli dropped down to third from pole at the start, but Hector Barbera's Pepe Aprilia was soon overtaken on the first lap, after which the Italian made up a small gap to Alex Debon (Blusens Aprilia).
 

Rain interrupts and delays 250cc race

The 250cc German Grand Prix was red-flagged due to rain hitting the Sachsenring circuit while the riders were completing their first lap and will be restarted at 12:45 local time. The starting grid will remain the same as in the original start, but the race will only run for 19 laps rather than the originally-scheduled 29.
 

Anderson gives Midtiylland first pole

Kasper Anderson gave Danish newcomer FC Midtiylland pole position for today's opening Superleague Formula race at Zolder after beating Rangers' John Martin in the final qualifying shoot-out. The Danish driver's 1m19.878s lap was sufficient to pip his Australian rival by 0.078s. "I'm very proud to have achieved Midtylland's first SLF pole in only its second qualifying session," said Anderson, who drove for Olympiacos in the inaugural season
 

Pedrosa leads Sachsenring warm-up

Dani Pedrosa led the way in the MotoGP warm-up ahead of this afternoon's German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring. The Honda rider, in perfectly sunny conditions after yesterday's soaking qualifying session, jumped ahead of Ducati rival Casey Stoner with five minutes left in the 20-minute session and improved on his own time in the dying seconds with a 1m22.391s lap time.

James Walker and Brendon Hartley led the way in the two 20-minute qualifying groups ahead of the Formula Renault 3.5 superpole session at Silverstone. The A group was the first to take to the track with P1 Motorsport's Walker setting an initial benchmark of 1m34.800s, ahead of the Carlin duo Oliver Turvey and Jaime Alguersuari.
