TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 1, 2009) - The results are in, and the first ever SCCA Club Racing Super Sweep and nationwide points Champions have been crowned.
Announced at the 2009 SCCA National Convention, the Super Sweep was developed to recognize drivers accomplishing four major feats in the 2009 SCCA Club Racing National season—a Divisional points title, a win in a key qualifying National race, a National Championship at the Runoffs and the newly-created nationwide points title all in the same class.
In all, seven drivers captured the coveted, inaugural Super Sweep honor, including:
Garry Crook, Pensacola, Fla., Gulf Coast Region - D Sports Racing
Cliff Ebben, Appleton, Wis., Milwaukee Region - GT-1
Joel Lipperini, Pittston, Pa., NE Pennsylvania Region - Showroom Stock C
Juan Marchand, South Haven, Mich., Western Michigan Region - Formula Mazda
Mark Mercer, Aurora, Colo., Colorado Region - Sports 2000
Mirl Swan, Austintown, Ohio, Mahoning Valley Region - Formula Atlantic
Michael Varacins, Burlington, Wis., Chicago Region - Formula Vee
"These drivers were the best of the best in 2009," SCCA President and CEO Jeff Dahnert said. "I commend them on their accomplishments this year. To meet all the criteria was not an easy task and they each represent what hard work, dedication and talent can produce."
Four of the drivers, Crook, Lipperini, Swan and Varacins, led the nationwide points entering the Runoffs, while the other three; Ebben, Marchand and Mercer—scored enough points in the Runoffs event to vault them to the top of the nationwide points in a come-from-behind win.
Each of the Super Sweep winners receives a beautiful crystal trophy and a free entry to the 2010 National Championship Runoffs.
The nationwide point structure was adopted in 2009 as part of the Super Sweep criteria, and was designed to allow drivers from coast to coast to compete within a common point structure throughout the season, regardless of Division. Points were awarded per the GCR as well as bonus points for the number of cars a driver beat in a given race (capped at 10 per race). A driver could count his or her best seven races in addition to the Runoffs, which paid double base points and did not have a cap on bonus points.
Prior to the adoption of the Interdivisional Championship race (now called the Runoffs) in 1966 to determine a class National Champion, a nationwide point structure was utilized from 1951 through 1965.
Eighteen drivers, in addition to those that earned the highest honor of the Super Sweep, clinched nationwide point titles at last week's National Championship Runoffs at Road America. They are:
American Sedan - Tom Ellis, Sunrise, Fla., Florida Region
C Sports Racing - Jacek Mucha, Laval, Que., Indianapolis Region
