Newman Wachs Racing has announced that Jonathan Summerton will return to its Atlantic Championship operation for the remainder of the 2009 season. Summerton, who drove for NWR in 2008, finished third in points after claiming two wins for the team (Edmonton and Road America), in addition to a pole position at the season finale at Road Atlanta. He has spent the first part of 2009 competing in the Firestone Indy Lights series, as well as the Atlantic Championship on a race-by-race basis. Now, team owner Eddie Wachs decided to reunite with the young American.

“I am glad to have Jonathan back with us. I think that he and John (Edwards) will both push one another and in turn, make each a better driver,” said Wachs.

Summerton currently sits second in points, just ahead of his new teammate Edwards. The 21-year-old is one of the most promising young American open-wheel racers and is under serious consideration for the Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson’s new Charlotte-based Formula 1 team for 2010.

“I am very excited to rejoin the team and get back to our winning ways of last year,” said Summerton. “I appreciate the opportunity Eddie has given me and I am looking forward to winning the championship that the team deserves.”
