Chevrolet Corvette driver Roberto Streit has walked away from a huge accident at Eau Rouge early in the third hour of this weekend's Spa 24 Hours.

Streit had just taken over the Sangari Team Brazil entry when he hit a curb and lost control. The Corvette, which had been running fifth, struck the barriers hard and came to rest across the pitlane exit.

The accident brought out the safety car for half an hour to allow the removal of the wrecked C6.R, which Streit was sharing with Enrique Bernoldi and Xavier Maassen. Streit is believed to be uninjured.

The crash has cut the lead held by the Selleslagh Racing Team Corvette of Oliver Gavin, who had built up an advantage of around half a minute before coming in for a scheduled pitstop just before the accident. Co-driver Bert Longin now heads Maserati driver Michael Bartels by just over 15 seconds.
