Round two of the IndyCar Series in St. Petersburg has been delayed due to a huge thunderstorm over the Florida venue and could be postponed until Monday.
Rain began falling just after the start of the Indy Lights race two hours ago, and that event was then curtailed on meteorological advice due to the approaching storm.
The organizers ordered the evacuation of the grandstands and hospitality suites due to the impending lightning and downpour.
The IndyCar race was set to commence at 3:45pm local time, but will now be delayed for at least 45 minutes to an hour according to the latest information from race control. Conditions at the track currently remain extremely wet.
