Final practice for the Toronto IndyCar race has been delayed due to a huge storm at the Canadian street track.
The forecast morning rain escalated into a downpour just as the cars came out, and with strong winds and lightning also arriving, the decision was made to immediately abandon the session. Race management ordered the evacuation of the grandstands and urged spectators to seek shelter until the storm had passed.
Forecasts predict that the storm will move across Toronto fairly quickly, although rain is expected to remain for the whole day.
The Indy Racing League still hopes to run practice, although the planned split session will be altered to give all 23 cars a full hour of running on the wet track ready for qualifying, which is currently scheduled for 2 p.m. local time.
Despite today's terrible weather, race day is expected to be dry and sunny.
