Casey Stoner, Ducati, Catalunya 2010Casey Stoner blamed himself for the incident that cost him a shot at victory at the Catalan Grand Prix.

The 2007 world champion was battling with race-winner Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso for the victory early on, but lost ground when he out-braked himself into Turn 1 on the sixth lap.

The incident caused him to ride over the asphalt run-off area and lose enough time to drop him to fifth place behind Randy de Puniet and Dani Pedrosa.

"It was totally my fault," said the Ducati rider. "I got too much speed on the straight; a slipstream off the Lorenzo and Dovizioso bikes, and just didn't brake early enough. When we got to the corner I thought I'd just go 'round the outside of it rather than trying too hard to stop the bike and go into everyone."

Over the remaining three-quarters of the race he passed de Puniet's LCR Honda and took advantage of factory rider Dovizioso crashing, but could not pass Pedrosa for second.

"It was an impossible battle with Dani," he added. "He rode very well. He didn't make any mistakes and managed to keep it clean coming out of the corners. Hats off to him.

"We changed the setup of the bike from the morning warm-up. At the end it was very good, but at the start it was very difficult to ride. We have to be happy with a podium today."
