Congratulations to sprint car ace of aces Steve Kinser, who turns 58 today.

Although best known for his exploits in the World of Outlaws, where he has won no fewer than 20 season championships, Kinser has never been afraid to step out of hs comfort zone. He entered the Indianapolis 500 in 1981, but crashed in practice and was unable to qualify. However, he returned in 1997 as a 42-year-old rookie, and finished 14th. He also took part in the International Race of Champions (IROC) series, scoring the only victory for a sprint car regular at Talladega in 1994, and ran in NASCAR's Cup Series for Kenny Bernstein the following season.

These days he sticks closer to his roots Outlaws – and he's still winning. Just a couple of weeks back at Williams Grove Speedway, Steve became the oldest driver ever to win a World of Outlaws main event. We doubt that record will hold for long, though.

• Also celebrating birthdays today are Kyle Petty, who is 52, and Sebastian Saavedra, who is 22.
