Stepped noses on Formula 1 cars will no longer be permitted next year, after the FIA approved a change to the 2014 technical regulations.
The nose shape first appeared on F1 cars last year as the result of a move to lower the nose of the car but retain the height of the chassis. Although a "vanity panel" was introduced for this year to get rid of the step, some teams opted not to run them because they provided no performance benefit. However, aware that F1 fans were unhappy with the look of the cars, the FIA has approved a tweak that will lower the height of the chassis to bring it in line with the nose.
A statement issued by the FIA after a meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council said: "Measures have been put in place to ensure that the cars do not incorporate a step in the chassis behind the nose. These changes will also ensure that a genuine low nose, introduced for safety reasons, is always used."
Further changes to the technical regulations are:
* The minimum weight limit of F1 cars has been raised by 5kg due to the fact the new V6 turbo engines will weigh more than the current V8 power units. The weight distribution rules have been changed as well.
* Electronic control of the rear brake circuit is permitted in order to ensure consistent braking while energy is being recovered.
* Side impact structures will become a standard item.
