Richie Stanaway's management has confirmed that he will be out of action for several weeks with the back injuries he suffered in last weekend's Formula Renault 3.5 weekend at Spa.
The New Zealander sustained two fractured vertebrae when he ran over the back of Carlos Huertas on the run to Les Combes in the wet second race of the weekend. Stanaway, who claimed he could not see exactly where Huertas was because of spray, was launched into the air before his car landed on all four wheels.
After doctors diagnosed that he had fractured two vertebrae he was transferred to a hospital in Paris. A statement from the iRace Professional group – a tie-up between the Gravity Sport management scheme and the Lotus Formula 1 team – said on Tuesday that Stanaway "will be out of action for several weeks." The statement did not confirm if he will have to miss any FR 3.5 races, with the next round at the Nurburgring almost a month away (June 29-31).
Fellow iRace driver Kevin Korjus, who drives for Tech 1 Racing, said: "We have a few weeks to prepare for the Nurburgring. Above all, I hope that Richie will be back soon in tip-top form. We share a flat and it's not nice to be at home knowing he's in hospital."
