Formula Renault 3.5 driver Richie Stanaway sustained fractured vertebrae in his crash in Sunday's rain-affected race at Spa.
The Lotus racer was launched over the back of Carlos Huertas' car on the approach to Les Combes. Stanaway's machine flew vertically for a short distance before landing heavily on its wheels. The 20-year-old reported via his Twitter feed that he would require surgery for the injury.
"I'm OK, although fractured vertebrae and need to be transferred to Paris for an operation," Stanaway wrote. Stanaway graduated to FR3.5 with Lotus this season after claiming last year's German Formula 3 title and winning at Spa in the first weekend of a partial GP3 campaign.
