The St. Petersburg round of the IZOD IndyCar Series has been rescheduled for 10am local time on Monday due to the storm that hit the circuit on Sunday afternoon.
Although this morning's warm-up took place in dry conditions, rain began during the Indy Lights race – and as the feeder series opener drew to a close, race organizers evacuated the grandstands and hospitality suites with weather forecasters suggesting a massive storm was imminent.
It duly arrived, complete with lightning, causing the IndyCar start first to be postponed by 45 minutes, and then called off until tomorrow as the rain continued to fall incessantly. Drivers out inspecting the track reported standing water six inches deep in places.
When the event starts tomorrow morning, Sao Paulo winner Will Power will start from pole position, having also been fastest in every practice session. Tony Kanaan joins him on the front row, with Scott Dixon – who topped today's warm-up – in third.
The rescheduled race will air live at 10 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
