TORONTO (July 9, 2004) – SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car regular Memo Gidley has been brought in to drive Rocketsports Racing’s #17 Champ Car for this weekend’s Molson Indy Toronto. After missing Friday’s action, including first day qualifying, Gidley will be in the No. 17 car beginning with Saturday.
“We had a contractual dispute with Nelson [Philippe],” Rockesports Racing Owner Paul Gentilozzi reported to speedtv.com. “Memo will take over the [No. 17] car effective immediately.”
Gidley won the Toyota Atlantic race in Toronto in 1997 with Lynx Racing.
Gidley drives the No. 48 Air Force Reserve Ford Focus in SPEED Touring Car competition, and is scheduled to join the team for testing early next week. No word yet on whether Gidley will drive the Rockesports entry at any subsequent events.
