Skip Barber Racing School today announced the Skip Barber 35th Anniversary Triple Crown, the first interdisciplinary race series of its kind. Each of the three Race Weekends in the Triple Crown will utilize both the open-wheel Formula Skip Barber racecars of the Skip Barber Race Series and the Mazda MX-5 Cup car cars of the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Challenge. The Triple Crown Champion will earn $4,500 in credit toward future Skip Barber Racing School events.
“We want to do some fun things for the company's 35th anniversary and create something that many of our current and past racers would like to participate in,” said Todd Snyder, Vice President of Competition for Skip Barber Racing School. “We've had runoffs before to see 'who is the best,' but this will be an opportunity to see who the best is in multiple cars on three of the most famous tracks in North America. We are still working on the details, like celebrity drivers and instructors, etc., but this is going to be something you don't want to miss!”
Skip Barber 35th Anniversary Triple Crown schedule:
Feb. 12-14, Sebring International Raceway, Fla.
June 11-13, Lime Rock Park, Conn.
Nov. 5-7, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Calif.
The Triple Crown format will match the standard regional Race Weekend format of two practice sessions on Friday, qualifying and first race on Saturday and the second race on Sunday. Friday practice will be split, with one session each in the Formula Skip Barber and MX-5 Cup racecars. Qualifying will alternate by weekend; the first and third weekend's qualifying will be in the Formula Skip Barber with qualifying for the second weekend in the Mazda MX-5 Cup cars.
The first race of the weekend will be in whichever car was used in qualifying with the second race to be contested in the other car. Triple Crown Race Weekends are $4,299, which includes practice, qualifying and two races.
