Ayrton SennaThe new feature film on Ayrton Senna has scooped a prestigious award at the renowned Sundance Film Festival for independent movies.

The award came after American film critics getting their first look at Senna gave rave reviews for the documentary that chronicles the life of the late three-time F1 World Champion. Senna, which was released in Japan and Brazil last year and will be screened worldwide throughout 2011, was awarded the World Cinema Audience Award for Documentary Film.

Director Asif Kapadia accepted the award on stage at the Sundance Festival, having flown back to the festival from a screening of the film in Salt Lake City.

"This is amazing, thank you so much," he said. "This festival has restored my faith in festivals. It has just been amazing – and this [award] tops it off."
