TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 24, 2004) – With the early entry deadline past, the 2004 edition of the SCCA National Championship Runoffs® Presented by Kohler looks to be the biggest collection of top Club Racing drivers ever, with nearly 800 drivers pre-registered for the Sept. 21-26 event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Online entries closed Aug. 20, and 795 entries were already received for the 41st running of the SCCA Runoffs. With two weekends of SCCA Club Racing National events remaining, the number of drivers eligible for the event will not be known until just after Labor Day Weekend, but the current number eclipses previous marks at this time.
Last year, a record 696 drivers took to the track during the week-long National Championship event, eclipsing the 1995 event by one. The total number of entries at this point last year, was a then-record 770, of which approximately 50 did not meet the final requirements to make the event.
“We are tracking toward a record-breaking 700 competitors for the Runoffs, which means that our Club Racing program participation is as healthy as ever,” SCCA President and CEO Steve Johnson said. “Despite concerns of a negative impact to the event due to economic issues, the high numbers demonstrate that our racers continue to place a high value on their SCCA Club Racing competition.”
As is traditionally the case, Formula Vee has is the largest field, with 53 entries, followed by E Production (48), Showroom Stock C (45), American Sedan and F Production (43).
