Mike Rockenfeller has had a massive accident in the eighth hour of the Le Mans 24 Hours race.
The Audi driver was trying to pass a GTE Ferrari through the Mulsanne kink when the pair made contact. The R18 TDI was completely destroyed in the resulting accident. It is unclear what condition the German is in, though Audi team principal Wolfgang Ullrich confirmed that Rockenfeller had climbed from the car himself.
"We don't know exactly what really happened," said Ullrich. "The only information we have is that Rockenfeller left the car himself. I don't know anymore. I don't know how OK he is."
The accident, which left the R18 TDI unrecognisable, is the second Audi has suffered in the 2011 event. Allan McNish was lucky to have escaped unscathed from another huge shunt in the first hour of the event.
The third Audi, the No. 2 car driven by Andre Lotterer, continues to lead the race.
