Giovanardi wins Thruxton BTCC race one

Fabrizio Giovanardi claimed his first British Touring Car Championship win of the season with a lights-to-flag victory in the first race of the day at Thruxton. The Vauxhall driver started from pole position in his Vectra and, despite his 1.5 second lead being eroded thanks to the appearance of the safety car at mid-distance, he was able to reassert his advantage over Matt Neal to win by just under half a second. Behind Neal, who maintained his 100 per cent record of podium finishes this year, Andrew Jordan came home third to make it a one-two-three finish for Vauxhall, five years and a day after it last locked out the podium

Morbidelli clinches Speedcar title

Vitantonio Liuzzi won today's final race of the Speedcar season in Bahrain, while Gianni Morbidelli clinched the title in fifth place. Morbidelli went into the reverse grid race one point ahead of reigning champion Johnny Herbert and his task was made a lot easier when Herbert was tapped into a spin at the start by Ramez Azzam. The Italian maintained fifth place in the race while Herbert charged back up from 11th, but the Briton could only make it as far as his tail and Morbidelli soaked up the pressure to clinch the championship
 

Vauxhall to pull out of BTCC

Vauxhall will pull out of the British Touring Car Championship at the end of this season. Triple Eight Engineering is running three Vectras this year for reigning double champion Fabrizio Giovanardi, Matt Neal and Andrew Jordan, but Vauxhall will not continue in the series into 2010, citing the absence of rival manufacturers and the economic downtoun as the reasons for its departure. Vauxhall's Andy Gibson said: "The company has enjoyed immense success with BTCC, both on track and as a focal marketing activity, however a number of factors have led us to take the decision to withdraw from the championship at the end of this season
