A re-marriage of sorts could happen for the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series, as Dan Wheldon is reported to return to Andretti Autosport, SPEED.com's Robin Miller reported Thursday.

Team principal Michael Andretti told Miller: “It's not done yet, but we're getting close.”

The report also indicated Wheldon has been working on a deal to resume with Bryan Herta Autosport, but could not come to the necessary terms.

The Englishman has made no secret of his desire to resume as a full-time driver after a busy 2011 which included his second Indianapolis 500 victory, testing of the 2012 IndyCar with the series and BHA, and sporadic TV appearances commentating for Versus. His “grid walk” segments with Miller received largely positive reviews.

Wheldon, who is competing for the GoDaddy IndyCar Challenge this weekend for Sam Schmidt Motorsports, would replace Danica Patrick in the GoDaddy-sponsored entry for the team. Wheldon raced with Andretti from 2003 through 2005, taking the 2005 Indianapolis 500 and championships.
