The Associated Press is reporting that Venezuelan government officials have frozen all disbursements of hard currency to automobile and motorcycle racers who compete abroad while they investigate allegations of corruption. The AP reports that Justice Minister Miguel Rodriguez told reporters Friday that some motorsports athletes have obtained hard currency for "activities that were either fictitious or overpriced."
The news follows the surprise withdrawal of Venezuela's E.J. Viso from this weekend's IndyCar Series finale in Fontana. Viso claimed to have the flu, although he did not notify his team until Thursday evening of his decision to pull out. Colombia's Carlos Munoz has replaced him Andretti Autosport's No. 5 entry this weekend.
