The latest development in an effort to bring IndyCar racing back to the streets of Detroit on Belle Isle Park took place Tuesday morning.

In a report by The Detroit News, Detroit's City Council approved a request from racing officials for the event, which is targeting the June 1-3, 2012 weekend.

Roger Penske has been determined to bring the event back, and this marks the next step in the process. Detroit Grand Prix Association spokesman Bud Denker told the News sponsorship will dictate whether the event is officially confirmed, and talks are ongoing to determine what that title sponsor will be.

Detroit last hosted an IndyCar race in 2007 and 2008, and from 1992 through 2001 before that.
