Initial discussions about a return for Detroit's Belle Isle Park to make another comeback on the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule took a step forward on Thursday.
According to a Detroit Free Press report, an application has been made to the Detroit City Council for a race held the week after the Indianapolis 500, June 1-3, 2012.
Detroit Grand Prix Association Bud Denker told the Free Press the council will vote for approval next week.
“The important thing now is getting city approval and tying up sponsorship,” he said. “We like the date, because it coattails on to the Indy 500 at the end of May and doesn't tie up Belle Isle for the summer.”
Several weeks ago, Roger Penske told the Detroit News he was working on the reincarnation of the event.
Detroit last hosted an IndyCar race in 2007 and 2008, and from 1992 through 2001 before that.
