Both Abarths crash out at shakedown

This morning's Rally of Portugal shakedown stage claimed both Abarth Grande Punto Super 2000s after both Bernardo Sousa and Jaromir Tarabus crashed off the road - ending their event before they had even reached the start. Accidents at shakedown are not unheard of, but they rarely put a driver out of the event altogether. Sousa was first to go, compounding the agony of what has been a shocking start to the year for the Portuguese driver
 

Latvala promises new approach

Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala has promised to take a more measured approach to the Rally of Portugal after his troubled start to the year. The Finn, desperate to get his season back on track after crashing on two of the three World Rally Championship events run so far this season, is taking a markedly different attitude to this week's fourth round of the series on the Algarve. Latvala has elected not to have any split times beamed to his Ford Focus RS WRC 08 and he has instructed co-driver Miikka Anttila to shout at him when they get to the more technical sections of stages.
 

Henning Solberg tops superspecial

Henning Solberg has taken a surprise early lead in the Rally of Portugal after winning the Thursday evening superspecial in the Algarve Stadium. The Stobart Ford driver beat the factory Citroen team's Dani Sordo by 0.1 seconds, with works Ford man Mikko Hirvonen only a further 0.1s behind in third place.
