Former World Rally champion Hannu Mikkola will be nominated as this year's "Flying Finn" at the Rally Finland next month.
Each season, the Rally Finland organizer honors one of the nation's most famous rally drivers with a display of their career highlights in the event's headquarters building. This year, it will be the 1983 world champion who is featured.
Mikkola's seven wins in the Rally Finland -- then known as the 1,000 Lakes -- will be well documented, as will the first season of the drivers' world championship, when Mikkola came within a point of edging Bjorn Waldegaard for the maiden title.
The main emphasis of the tribute to the man once known as the 'angel-faced devil' will be 1983, and the four wins - including the 1,000 Lakes - which carried him to a dominant maiden world title with Audi. His nearest rival in his championship season was Walter Rohrl, who was 23 points behind.
