Rally Finland, 2008This year's Rally Finland has undergone a 40 percent budget cut from 2008, due to the current economic climate.

The Jyvaskyla-based event, running from July 30-August 2, is regarded by many in the World Rally Championship as the perfect business model of how to run an event at the highest level.

Despite the rally's sound economic footing, promoter Jarmo Mahonen admits this year will be tough.

He said: "The economic recession is biting harder by the day in Finland. An obvious symptom of that is the fact that we have lost over 1,000 pre-booked VIP guests. Consequently, the event's budget has now been slashed by over 40 percent for this summer. As an event organiser, we must be prepared for several lean years."

The good news for Rally Finland is that it is back on the WRC promoter's provision calendar for next season. This will come as a relief to double world champion - and seven-time winner of his home event - Marcus Gronholm, who disagreed with a rotational calendar from the outset.

Gronholm said at the time: "If they don't run this event, there will be riots in Jyvaskyla."
