The Grand-Am Rolex Series adds another marquee name to its GT class lineup for 2012, with the Dodge Viper set to return to competition in the hands of Racers Edge Motorsports.
Racers Edge previously ran in class with Mazdas and Pontiacs and has undergone a thorough development process of two Viper Competition Coupes, one for the full season and the second as a test car. American open-wheel veteran Jan Heylen and Doug Peterson are slated for the 2012 season in the team's No. 87 entry.
Additionally, the two will drive a Dodge Challenger SRT8 in the supporting Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, one of two cars in that series.
"We have been working closely with Grand-Am officials and our suppliers to develop a Viper spec engine that meets all of Grand-Am's requirements," said David Bailey, Senior Manager, SRT Motorsports Engineering. "We are very excited to see the Viper and Racers Edge competing in the Rolex Series next year."
While a Viper will have last competed in the series a decade earlier, at the 2002 Rolex 24, its seminal moment in the championship came with an overall win at the 2000 Rolex 24, a win for the factory ORECA Dodge Viper program in the GTS class with Karl Wendlinger, Olivier Beretta and Dominique Dupuy.
