While many racing series are still on winter break, or at best starting preseason testing, the Sports Car Club of America is full throttle into the 2013 Club Racing season. More than 300 drivers from all over the country are descending on Sebring International Raceway for Rounds 1 and 2 of the 12-race U.S. Majors Tour, Jan. 4-6.
The doubleheader weekend also includes the return of the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour, both part of the SafeRacer SCCA National Racing Series.
Among the races to watch this weekend will be Spec Racer Ford, which boasts more than 60 entries, including defending SCCA National Championship Runoffs winner Cliff White. An exciting battle is always guaranteed when Spec Miata takes to the track, and with more than 50 cars on tap at Sebring, 2012 Champ Jim Drago will have his hands full as the green flag waves over the starting line.
Some of the best drivers in the country, past and present, got their start with SCCA. Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Michael Andretti, Boris Said, Sam Hornish, and J.R. Hildebrand all cut their teeth with SCCA Club Racing – and its not uncommon to see teams and drivers from professional racing series utilizing the competition found at these early season SCCA races as a way to prepare for the upcoming season.
Fans are welcome to visit the historic 17-turn, 3.74-mile road course to catch all the action live. The $10 admission fee includes a free program and a paddock pass allowing spectators into the garage areas for up close visits with the cars and drivers.
If you are unable to attend, you can find live timing and scoring and lap notes via the SCCA Pit Board at www.scca.com/sccalive. Entry lists, full event schedules, and more information is available at www.sccamajors.com.
As part of RACER.com's commitment to grassroots racing, we will be bringing you coverage of all 20 SCCA U.S. Majors Tours on the website. Also, RACER.com's sister publication, SportsCar
