Peugeot Sport is considering a return to the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb this summer with a purpose-built 208.
A spokesman for the French manufacturer admitted the project was being investigated as part of a potential route back into international motorsport, following the decision to cancel the 908 sports car at the start of last year.
"After the announcement of the [cancellation of the] 908 last year, Peugeot said to Peugeot Sport: 'You have to see a lot of different races and events in the world," said the source. "Pikes Peak is one event, but it's too early say it's true that we will compete there. We are thinking about it and we are thinking about a lot of different things."
The Peugeot source talked down speculation about Sebastien Loeb driving the car, adding: "People should not forget that he is a Citroen driver and a very important ambassador for that brand.
"Nothing is certain about this, even though he is working in the PSA Group the same as us."
Peugeot has won the famous Colorado hillclimb twice in the past with its 405 T16 model.
