Vitaly Petrov will have a five-place grid penalty for the Spanish Grand Prix after needing a gearbox change ahead of qualifying on Saturday.

The Russian crashed at Turn 4 about halfway through the first practice session, spinning off the track and swiping the crash barriers. The impact damaged the rear of the car and his Renault team decided that a new gearbox needed to be fitted.

With that gearbox change a breach of F1's technical regulations, Petrov will be moved five places down the grid.
