Stewart-Haas Racing has confirmed that veteran open-wheel and sports car racer Max Papis will fill in for the injured Tony Stewart in the team's No. 14 at this weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen.
Italian Papis, 43, has made 35 Sprint Cup Series starts, with a career-best finish of eighth in 2009 at Watkins Glen. Although he has focused his efforts on NASCAR in recent years, including the Nationwide Series, Truck Series and Canadian Tire Series, he has competed in Formula 1, Indy cars and sports cars. Papis won the 2004 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series title alongside co-driver Scott Pruett. He tested for SHR at Road Atlanta last week.
Stewart underwent surgery on his right leg early Tuesday morning, after suffering a broken tibia and fibula in a sprint car crash on Monday night at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The team says that a second surgery will be necessary.
Stewart's injury led SHR to cancel a test planned for todayat Atlanta Motor Speedway. It is not yet known how long he might be out of the car, or who might drive the No. 14 beyond Watkins Glen.
