The British Sumo Power Nissan team has been awarded victory in the Tourist Trophy at Silverstone, Britain's round of the FIA GT1 World Championship. Warren Hughes and Jamie Campbell-Walter have been declared the winners after the two cars that finished ahead of them in the one-hour "championship" race received penalties.
The winning Young Driver AMR Aston Martin driven by Darren Turner and Tomas Enge was excluded because its mandatory underfloor skid plank was worn beyond the permitted tolerance. The Hexis Aston shared by Frederic Makowiecki and Thomas Accary, which finished second, was given a 15-second penalty for not taking a drive-through penalty within three laps.
The penalties mean that Hexis is still classified second, now behind the Nissan. The Reiter Lamborghini driven by Jos Menten and Frank Kechele moves up to fourth.
Sumo Power team manager Allen Orchard said: "Wow! Normally, I like to talk, but I don't know what to say. No one wants to win like this and the Young Driver guys are nice people, but rules are rules. Our plank was checked, just like everyone else's."
It is expected that the German-run Young Driver team will appeal the decision.
