New WTCC ballast system comes into force
SEAT and BMW will each carry an extra 40 kilograms of weight in the next World Touring Car round in Morocco next month as the championship's new compensation weight system comes into force for the first time.
The system alters the minimum weight of each car based on the fastest lap times of the two quickest examples of each model in qualifying and race sessions.
The times from the opening two races in Brazil and Mexico were averaged and, although SEAT won all four races, BMW drivers set the pole time and fastest lap in both races at Puebla, so SEAT's Leon TDi and BMW's 320si will carry 40kg each on top of the 1170kg minimum weight limit.
The other WTCC cars – the Chevrolet Cruze, Lada 110, gasoline-powered SEAT Leon and Alex Zanardi's sequential gearbox BMW – will each have 20kg deducted from their minimum weight.
The weights will remain the same for the next three rounds of the championship, before averages are taken from the races at Marrakech, Pau and Valencia and new weight limits calculated for Brno in June.
