The NASCAR Nationwide Series is set to compete for the first time at Road America next year, the Elkhart Lake, Wis. track taking the place of the Milwaukee Mile in the 2010 calendar. Initially the one-mile historic oval – America's oldest racetrack – was set to host an event on June 19, but promoters failed to secure the necessary funding to stage both the Nationwide and Truck Series races.
Road America will take its place on the Nationwide calendar, series officials announced, adding a third road-course event to the series schedule.
"It's a really big deal for us, and I'm really excited because this is a new audience for us in large part and will showcase our facility to new fans," said the track's president George Bruggenthies. "We've had five generations of fans coming to Road America, and it's definitely a unique experience."
Many Sprint Cup Series drivers are expected to take part in the event, although the number will be somehow limited by the Cup event being held on the same weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
Back in 1956, NASCAR's top-series made their only visit to Road America in an event won by two-time champion Tim Flock.
