In response to speculation that NASCAR is on the verge of scrapping its points system used for the Sprint Cup Series, Ramsey Poston, NASCAR managing director of corporate communications, told the Daytona Beach News Journal that the sanctioning body has posed several new competition ideas to drivers and car owners in a recent series of meetings, and that NASCAR president Mike Helton and vp of competition Robin Pemberton will address possible changes Friday at Daytona International Speedway.
"NASCAR executives, including chairman and CEO Brian France, are in the process of meeting with drivers and team owners," Poston told the Journal "In those meetings we have discussed a number of ideas for potential changes for the coming season, none of which have been finalized at this point." NASCAR president Mike Helton and vice president of competition Robin Pemberton will address 2011 rule changes in a news conference scheduled Friday at Daytona International Speedway.
The Associated Press reported that unnamed sources are indicating that NASCAR is considering dropping the current system, in place since 1975, in favor of a new points table that would award 43 points to each race winner, and one point less for each ensuing position, down to one point for the 43rd-place finisher.
