TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 14, 2007) – Two thrilling SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup races from Burke Lakefront Airport are on SPEED Saturday, Dec. 15.
The first of two MX-5 Cup races from the Cleveland Grand Prix airs at 2:00 p.m. (EST). Fresh off his first professional motorsports win at the Grand Prix of Portland, Andrew Caddell picks up where he left off in his No. 30 TeamMER/AimSport/Pinnacle Mazda MX-5, starting Round Five from pole. Teammate and point leader Jason Saini starts alongside in his No. 30 Autobarn Mazda/Saferacer.com MX-5, but a trip through the grass in Turn One sends Saini well back in the order. The No. 11 Alara Racing MX-5 of Ara Malkhassian gets a much better start, going from fifth to second. While Malkhassian and Caddell fight for the lead, Saini is making quick work of the cars ahead of him and finds himself within striking distance of the leaders with plenty of time to plan his attack. For the remaining 20 laps, Saini, Caddell and Malkhassian put on a great podium show as the sun sets over Lake Erie.
Round Six from Cleveland follows at 2:30 p.m. (EST). Saini learns his lesson from the previous race by earning the pole and getting through Turn One cleanly. Unfortunately he has the No. 80 Hooverspeed/MobiTV MX-5 of Matt Cross in hot pursuit. Cross takes over the lead on lap three and is followed by the No. 70 Velocity-Club.com/SCDA1.com MX-5 of Elivan Goulart, while Saini falls into the clutches of his teammate Caddell. When Cross and Goulart both make mistakes, Caddell and Saini push ahead. The MER teammates will also make errors, but theirs will come on the white flag lap, leaving you on the edge of your seat wondering who will take the win.
