Yvan MullerFormer World Touring Car Champion Yvan Muller has retired from the opening day of Rally de France.

The Frenchman's Citroen Xsara WRC suffered a fuel-related problem on the way into lunchtime service in Mulhouse. The car's fuel pumps are believed to be the problem.

Muller had made a solid start his first World Rally Championship event, heading out of the first loop in 12th place. Muller was 16th quickest on the opening stage after stalling at the start, but his times improved: 14th fastest in SS2; 12th fastest in SS3 and 11th in the morning's final stage.

His Motors TV-backed Citroen is expected to return under superally regulations for tomorrow's stages.
